[edit]Brunei controversy
In 1997, Marketic filed a lawsuit against the ruling relatives of Brunei for $90 million. In the case, Shannon alleges that they & 6 other young females were paid $127,200 each for a modeling job in Brunei (whereas on the ABC news program 20/20, Marketic said they was supposed to provide "intellectual conversations" with visiting guests of the royal relatives). These other females include Miss United Kingdom runner up Paula Bradbury & former Miss Teen USA & future Miss USA Brandi Sherwood.
Marketic maintained that they & the females were held as "sex slaves" & were "intimidated & coerced in to performing physically & morally repulsive acts of prostitution."[3] They were apparently ordered to dance for 5–6 hours every night at parties in the coursework of which their bodies & private parts were groped & grabbed by men. In the coursework of the dances, Shannon was also allegedly abused verbally with comments made about her "real" breasts.[4] The females were often told to go with a man to have "tea" with him & then had sex with him. In her interview on 20/20, Marketic said that, after 32 days of being held against her will, they managed to smuggle a letter out to the U.S. Embassy; soon afterwards, they was allegedly paid $10,000 & forced to fly back to the United States alone.[citation needed] The case was thrown out due to the immunity of the ruling relatives as heads of state. There has been no further inquiry in to this case, although there's allegations both supporting & refuting her claims. Paula Bradbury separately sued the Sultan & won 500,000 pounds in settlement.[5]
